Further information for A Provisional Cast On;
A provisional cast on is used to keep the cast on stitches ‘live’ so they can be knitted later on. There are a few ways to make a provisional cast on, this is the one we have used.
With some yarn a similar weight to your project yarn and a crochet hook, chain around 6 stitches more than stated on your pattern. Insert your knitting needle into the ‘bumps’ on the back of the crochet chain. Using the correct yarn for your project pick up the amount of stitches needed for the pattern.
Work pattern as stated.
To pick up the live stitches, thread your knitting needle through the right side of each stitch.
Remove the crochet chain by untying the end and pulling free.

Arrange your stitches on your needles so that when the wrong sides are facing each other the points of the needles are

Thread a tapestry needle with the yarn you have been using for your project.
On the front needles, go through the first stitch as if to purl, do not pull the stitch off the needle. On the needle on the back go through as if to knit, do not pull the stitch off the needle.
** On the front needle, go through the first stitch as if to knit, pull this stitch off the needle. Staying on the front needle, go though the new first stitch as if to purl, do not pull the stitch off the needle.
On the back needle, go through the first stitch as if to purl, pull this stitch off the needle. Staying on the back needle, go through the new first stitch as if to knit, do not pull the stitch off the needle.
Rep from ** until you have 1 stitch remaining on each needle.
On the front needle, go through the stitch as if to knit, pull this stitch off the needle.
On the back needle, go through the stitch as if to purl, pull this stitch off the needle.
You may need to adjust your tension of this row, starting on the right side of the row pull up and the right side of the stitch, then the left.
